Thales awarded contract for massive Singapore metro re-signalling project

Re-signalling will enhance efficiency of over 100 km of Singapore’s metro lines.

Toronto, February 8, 2012: Thales Canada has been selected by SMRT Corporation Ltd. to supply its world-leading SelTrac® Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution to re-signal the North-South and East-West lines, plus an extension. The metro lines combined are more than 100 km long and serve 58 stations including those of the future Tuas West line extension. The entire system is expected to be operational by 2018.

“This is a wonderful way to start off the new year,” said Paul Kahn, President and CEO, Thales Canada. “We are proud to add Singapore to our broad list of world cities benefiting from SelTrac CBTC technology. Our advanced signalling solution will assist Singapore’s SMRT and LTA to better manage the increasing demand in ridership on two of its busiest lines over the next decade. This latest contract award demonstrates the acknowledged expertise and experience of Thales in transportation systems and further reinforces Thales’ worldwide leading position on the CBTC market.”
“This is a massive project on a working line and will involve very close co-ordination between SMRT, Thales and the authority,” said Mr. Khoo Hean Siang, SMRT Executive Vice President for Trains.

The re-signalling contract is part of SMRT’s and LTA’s plan to improve the public transport system, as growing population and new developments along rail axes have led to the increase of passenger traffic on the Singapore metro network. The addition of new trains and the enhancement of the signalling system will ease the congestion along the two lines especially during peak periods. Work will be carried out during non-passenger service hours providing minimum inconvenience to commuters.

Thales Canada will work with Thales Solutions Asia in Singapore to install the technology. SelTrac CBTC, incorporating moving-block technology, ensures safe train operation with minimal train separation thereby maximizing passenger service frequency and system capacity. Thales’ advanced solution will also lower the life-cycle costs for the operator.

Since 1985, Thales’ CBTC system has been proven on 55 projects in 31 cities around the world and operates on over 1,200 km of track, carrying an estimated 3 billion passengers annually.

Thales Canada has 1,300 employees in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Tor¬onto and Vancouver working in Defence & Security, Aerospace and Transportation. Sales across Thales operations in Canada exceeded $500 million (CAD) for 2011 to a range of customers including urban rail service providers, civil aviation companies, and military and security agencies. www.thalesgroup.com/canada
